There’s a popular quote that says “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body”. Studies have shown that if you are constantly stimulating your mind, you slow the progress of mental diseases.
It is a proven fact that Keeping your brain active and engaged prevents it from losing its power, by sharpening its logical ability. This is because the brain operates very much like a muscle; you have to exercise it to keep it healthy and strong.
The Bible says in 2 Timothy 2:15:
Study to shew thyself approved unto God a workman that needed not to be ashamed rightly dividing the word of truth.
Everything you read fills your head with new bits of information, and you never know when it might come in handy. The more knowledge you have, the better equipped you are, and the more able you become to tackle challenges.
If you want to be successful in any endeavor, you must make reading a lifestyle. Reading expands your awareness and your knowledge database. The more you read, the more words you are exposed to. These words will inevitably make their way into your everyday vocabulary, and being articulate and well-spoken is a bonus point in many professions.
What is the one thing that nearly all highly wealthy people have in common? Books! Books and more books
Most of them spend a lot of time reading and gathering information. The multi-billionaires such as Warren Buffet, Oprah Winfrey and Bill Gates crave and devour Knowledge and information on a daily basis.
Warren Buffet has said that he spends about 80% of his time reading and building up and accumulating knowledge and information. He attributes much of his money-making ideas and decision-making to reading.
He also stated that having the right information helps to prevent him from making rash decisions. Those who are knowledgeable will always rule over those who lack wisdom and knowledge and the world is divided into two groups of people: those who read books and those who do what those who read books say. That’s why acquiring knowledge is best important.
Just as your phone needs to stay charged through electricity, so also your brain needs to stay charged by reading. Oxygen is found in air but knowledge is found in books. It was Bishop David Abioye who said: “you cannot make global impact with local knowledge”. How far you go in search of knowledge defines the limit of how far you can go in life. Go far in search of knowledge and your world will come afar in search of you.
To read according to A.C Grayling is to soar to a point of vantage which gives a view over wide terrains of history, human variety, ideas, shared experiences and the fruits of many inquiries”.
Invest in books.
